At nine stories tall, and over 130,000 square feet, H. F. du Pont’s beloved country house is expansive and imposing. Situated among 100 foot tall trees on a picturesque hillside, the house museum is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon.
For all of the same reasons, routine building maintenance tasks quickly become monumental undertakings. Due to the surrounding landscape, exterior maintenance requires elaborate and expensive scaffolding. What began as a simple shutter repair and replacement project became a seven year endeavor to plan a comprehensive exterior restoration program.
Working closely with Winterthur’s renowned conservation staff, all products, materials and methods were scrutinized, researched, discussed, and field tested prior to final selection. This painstaking process ultimately resulted in selections which minimize maintenance and maximize service life, all the while being sympathetic with the style, character and history of this treasured estate.
