R G Architects was hired by the Appoquinimink School District to resolve a security issue that had plagued the school since it was built in 1970. The main office was located within the interior of the school and not directly adjacent to the front door. In addition, the main entrance was difficult to find from the parking lot and they needed a covered entry for the after school program. The resolution called for a new administration area, vestibule, two covered entry roofs, and a clearly visible entry tower.
The project started with the complete gutting of the entire administration area and two adjoining classrooms. On the exterior, RGA designed an entry “tower” that resolved the issue of an entry whose location was somewhat hard to locate and distinguish from the loading dock. The tower leads to a new covered walkway connecting into the new entry vestibule. The low, dark ceiling of the previous entry is now replaced by a soaring sky lit space with an “A” framed full-height glass wall, exposed brick walls, and full security electronics.
RGA created a new teacher’s work room, nurse’s suite, large conference room, and new offices for both the Principal and Vice Principal. The vestibule opens to a new spacious reception area that is open and inviting, yet still provides a secure setting for students and staff. The room finishes, furniture and lighting all combined to create a startling improvement from the original design that has astounded the staff and the public.
