The New Silver Lake Elementary School

The addition and renovation project for Appoquinimink School District's Silver Lake Elementary School was a complete building-wide upgrade to fully re-invent the school for 21st-century learning. The original 55,000-square-foot windowless building was constructed in 1970, and many issues have arisen over the past five decades.
The primary goals of modernizing the facility included enlarged classrooms, creating multi-use learning spaces (“commons”), a controlled, secure entry, a reimagined media center and library, enlarged stage and band spaces, upgraded serving and cafeteria facilities, and new HVAC systems, windows, and doors.
The additions, comprised of a full-size gymnasium, and 24,000 square-feet of instructional space, improve overall capacity, improved educational delivery, and improve circulation.
All existing interior spaces were demolished, leaving only the building’s shell and structural system, allowing for a complete re-imagining of the Silver Lake Elementary School.  New classrooms integrate the latest technology, and provide abundant natural light, improve team teaching, allowing for one-to-one integration, and greatly improve acoustics.
Where the Media Center previously existed, an exterior courtyard now stands, allowing natural light to once-windowless classrooms. The courtyard design includes an outdoor classroom.  Other exterior amenities include a new playground, which is available to the community during non-school hours
