R G Architects was commissioned to design the adaptive-reuse for the Education Center the Mt. Harmon Plantation in Earleville, Maryland. The stables were renovated into the new Education & Discovery Center and will expand Mount Harmon’s education program and facilities, and include much needed orientation, demonstration, and exhibit areas. The stables were renovated in order to provide accessible entrances, visitor amenities such as restrooms and a small gift shop. Renovations include sensitive restoration of the buildings original siding, stable doors and windows, while providing upgraded building systems. Creative use of insulation materials, along with geothermal HVAC systems and a commitment to keeping as much of the original fabric of the building intact, make this adaptive re-use a truly green building renovation.
